`Rock of Ages ‘ Star, Constantine Maroulis, Featured in NY Chiropractic & Physical Therapy Video

Dec. 14th, 2013 – Staten Island, New York–Tony Award Nominated, ‘Rock of Ages’ Star, Constantine Maroulis Featured in NY Chiropractic & Physical Therapy’s Holiday Music Video

NY Chiropractic & Physical Therapy is proud to announce that one of the most popular vocalists to come out of the American Idol phenomenon, Constantine Maroulis, has recorded a holiday music video in their honor, performing a Christmas rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Maroulis is no stranger to soulful rock and roll—his most notable appearance on Broadway was as Rock of Ages front man, Drew Boley, a role for which he received a prestigious Tony Award nomination. More recently, Maroulis has joined the cast of Jekyll & Hyde, and is quoted as performing with a “triumph of vocal pyrotechnics,” a common understanding amongst those who are familiar with his raw and haunting resonance.

In this version of “Hallelujah,” originally covered by NYC based band Cloverton, the story of the birth of Jesus Christ is retold with moving verses that uplift the listener. Their rendition brings out the spiritual tones of the original song, and leaves listeners with a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.  Maroulis recorded the song and video alongside two of his Jessie’s Girl band mates, an 80’s powerhouse cover band that performs weekly at the Canal Room in Manhattan.

Dr. John Piazza Among Featured Presenters at NY & NJSIPP Pain Medicine Symposium

Oct. 28th, 2013 – Staten Island, New York —The 2013 NY & NJSIPP Pain Medicine Symposium will be held from the 8th to the 10th of November at the Hyatt Regency on the Hudson, featuring a conference topic of Evolving Advanced Pain Therapies.  NY Chiropractic & Physical Therapy’s Dr. John Piazza, a board certified chiropractor, will be a featured presenter at the symposium.

With over 400 healthcare professionals gathering to lecture on the different aspects of pain management, the conference will expand upon pain management and interventional pain management within the scope of perfecting these practices for a better foundation of patient treatment.

A focus of the symposium will be centered on non-invasive forms of pain management. As a growing field of medicine moving from behind the stigma of holistic treatment, non-invasive pain management is explored specially by those who practice Chiropractic care. Dr. John Piazza has extensively explored the benefits of specialized exercises for sufferers of lower back pain.

By presenting treatments and providing clinical evidence of the effectiveness of exercise and therapy modalities such as clinical Pilates, core exercises, yoga, and the use of innovative neuromuscular re-education tools like SpineForce, Dr. Piazza advises that sufferers of lower back pain are more likely to build up core muscle that can gradually decrease discomfort in a self-sustaining way. The exploration of this non-invasive approach is absolutely necessary, taking into account the estimated 44 million Americans who suffer from lower back pain on a daily basis.  It is estimated that between $33 to $55 billion is spent yearly in direct medical cost for the treatment of lower back pain.

Cirque du Soleil’s Clinical Pilates Instructor Joins NY Chiropractic and Physical Therapy

Oct. 1, 2013 – Staten Island, NY—Matt Nelson, a well known Clinical Pilates instructor who previously worked with the dancers, acrobats and contortionists of Cirque du Soleil, is now working as a Rehab and Conditioning Expert at NY Chiropractic and Physical Therapy.

“Almost every kind of lifestyle can benefit from Clinical Pilates,” Matt said. “I’ve even treated a running back from the Miami Dolphins for his knee and hip injuries.” This is reminiscent of the fact that the creator of Pilates, Joseph Pilates, was, in fact, honing his art for athletes such as Max Schmeling, a boxer who faced Joe Louis in the 1930’s. It wasn’t until Ron Fletcher created a dance-based method that grew popular amongst celebrities of the time that this form of exercise became wrongly categorized as useful solely for dancers.

Nelson actually helped a severely injured LAPD officer get back to work after two years on sabbatical. Matt reflected on this particular job, saying, “She’d had two spinal surgeries, and tried countless forms of therapy, but nothing seemed to work. It took us only four to six weeks of working together, and I had her back on restrictive duty.” This is because of the composition of Clinical Pilates, which incorporates Joseph Pilates’ method with physical therapy techniques.

Proper rehabilitation is only achievable through understanding kinesiology. Rushi Shahiwala, the Director of Physical Therapy at NYCPT, remarks on this when she says, “If you hurt your knee and come for Clinical Pilates as rehabilitation, we don’t work the knee; we work the muscles above and below the knee. We balance out the body so that you strengthen the injured portion, and increase your core strength.”

Perhaps Nelson’s most popular success story is that of a girl in Cirque du Soleil who had fallen during the silk act. She suffered a broken pelvis, among other injuries, and was briefly in a coma. After six months of trying other rehabilitation techniques, she was brought in to see Matt for Clinical Pilates. Nelson worked what he calls the “stabilization” muscles, allowing support for the rest of the body. Her doctor couldn’t believe the degree of extension she had achieved after only two months of working with Nelson.

Matt stressed the athletic perks of Clinical Pilates, saying “It has the ability to make you light on your feet, and is great for twisting and jumping, all through non-weight bearing exercises.” On top of that, Pilates is great for every kind of sport, and is completely changeable depending on your profession. It aids in weight loss, and builds long, lean muscles, driving your focus for top performance, whether you are a child athlete, or a professional.

About Matt Nelson:

Matt Nelson is NYCPT’s Clinical Pilates instructor. He has over 20 years of experience in Dance and Pilates, beginning with his MFA in Dance Kinesiology and Movement Analysis, and expanding to training and instructing athletes and artists in productions such as Cirque du Soleil, and Celine Dion’s headlining Vegas show.

NYS Chiropractic Group Appoints Dr. John Piazza as President of District 5

Dr. Piazza aims to use appointment as catalyst to combat prescription drug addiction

Sept. 17, 2013 – Staten Island, NY–After almost 20 years of dedication to the Chiropractic profession, the New York State Chiropractic Association (NYSCA) has appointed NY Chiropractic and Physical Therapy’s Dr. John Piazza as President of their District 5. NYSCA has been the governing foundation for Chiropractic service standards since 1970.

With this announcement, Dr. Piazza launches his initiative towards decreasing Staten Island’s dependency on prescription medications. He vehemently encourages the usage of Chiropractic care and Physical Therapy as a viable alternative to drugs for the treatment of injuries from work, auto-accidents, or any chronic pain. This supports the views of New York State Assemblyman Michael Cusick, who has worked tirelessly to curtail the disturbing hike of prescription medication addiction. When reflecting on one of last month’s articles in the Staten Island Advance concerning prescription drug abuse, Cusick said, “Staten Island has the highest rate of addiction and pill overdose deaths in the city, a harrowing realization.”

By working with local legislators on a state level, Dr. Piazza continues to lobby on behalf of NYSCA to broaden the coverage available to Workers’ Compensation patients. This is following the 2010 legislation that restricts patients from having access to long term treatment for chronic pain. Senator Diane Savino makes a note of this legislation when asked about the epidemic on Staten Island: “Patients turn to pain medication because they no longer have access to services such as chiropractic care, and often this is how the cycle of addiction begins.”

Dr. Piazza hopes to further educate the public on recent innovations in the Chiropractic field, so that they understand there are alternative options for pain management. “We have enhanced our ability to lessen the need for prescription drugs or surgery,” he said recently. “Significant advancements in the Chiropractic field are comprised of new techniques and modalities, such as Laser Therapy devices that emit healing photons of light from a hand-held device. There is also the SpineForce 3-D Exercise Technology, which is the first FDA cleared machine designed to pinpoint and strengthen the 180 deep spinal muscles that improve strength, balance, coordination, proprioception, posture and range of motion all in one unique machine.”
